Rebecca R. Rod, Artist
"My artwork draws upon an ancient spiritual legacy that reaches back to a time when images and vessels of clay were formed by people whose lives embraced and intertwined the sacred and the secular. At its deepest level, working with clay has become a form of spiritual practice for me. The process of producing each piece is akin to ritualistic activity -- centering, building, coiling, burnishing, carving patterns -- even the sacrifice of the piece to the fire of the kiln in the end. I am able to manifest my personal notions of the Divine into real objects to see and to hold -- objects from which I and others can then draw strength or peace, power or comfort."
Rebecca has been working with clay since 1985, and has been self-employed as an artist since 1995. She has given workshops on Art & Spirituality, slide shows on Women & Art, and was instrumental in starting an annual arts and crafts show at the University of Idaho called WomensWorks. Rebecca has always been interested in religion and spirituality, and is an active member of her local Unitarian Universalist Church. She lives in Moscow, Idaho, with her partner, Theresa, and their two cats, Lucy and Ethel.
